Dr Tan Chong Koay, a fund manager with John Govett (Asia) Pte Ltd in Singapore, is a contrarian who believes in buying on crashes and selling on extended rallies. In 1987, Dr Tan (then with Arab-Malaysian Merchant Bank) had sold 65 per cent of his stocks in June, and was thus heavily in cash before the October Crash.
